Mary Johnston Hospital Offers Discount on COVID-19 Test ServicesSeptember 10, 2020
Mary Johnston Hospital is now offeringdiscounted COVID-19 test package services for companies and groups of individuals. COVID-19 test services include the Rapid Antibody Test or RAT for the Immunoglobulin M (IgM) and Immunoglobulin G (IgG), the serology testing or the Chemiluminescence Enzyme Immunoassays (CLIA) and the real-time Reverse Pranscription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (rPT-PCR) assay or the commonly known as “swab test”.Swabs are taken from a person’s nose or throat to determine the actual presence of coronavirus. The rPT-PCR remains to be the standard for COVID-19 testing in the country whereas RATs are used by companies as clearance to return to work and on travel purposes. This is according to the interim guidelines of the Department of Health released last April 2020.
At a minimum of 10 individuals, the MJH IgG and IgM rapid test costs at Php1,500.00 from its regular price of PHP 1,756.00. CLIA is offered at a discounted rate of Php1,700.00 from its original price of PhP2,000.00. The swab test is offered at Php7,000.00. Alumni members of the MJH can avail of the same discounts.
When an antigen or a toxin enters a human body, it induces immune response through the body’s immune system to produce the antibody or the so-called immunoglobulin (iG) to neutralize the toxin and help fight-off infection. According to the US Center for Disease and Prevention Control, the antibodyis protective protein produce by our body to fight the antigen. COVID-19 RAT is a test to determine if our body’s immune system produces such antibodies. The test can read the presence of IgM and IgG in the blood sample extracted for testing. A positive IgM test means there are traces of IgM in the blood sample which indicates that a person may have been recently infected or still infected by the virus. An IgG positive test indicates that the tested person could have contracted COVID-19 in the past but have developed antibodies protecting the body from infection.
CLIA on the other hand is a quantitative, lab-based, and uses whole blood, plasma, or serum samples from patients. According to the Center for Health Security of John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the test relies on mixing patient samples with a known viral protein, buffer reagents, and specific enzyme-labeled antibodies that allow a light-based, luminescent read-out., The amount of light (radiance) emitted from each sample is then be used to calculate the number of antibodies present in a patient sample. This test can look for multiple types of antibodies, including IgG, IgM, and IgA. It helps identify whether a person has been exposed to a pathogen. It is a technique that uses the emission of electromagnetic reaction caused by a chemical reaction to produce light and detect antibodies against the virus that causes COVID-19 in human serum or plasma.
Antibody testing can help mitigates the negative impact of the virus since it allows medical practitioners to determine a person’s immunity to the virus for proper treatment to be able to return to work, for their travel requirements and to have peace of mind. The stress brought by this pandemic disease can lower a person’s immune system.
COVID-19 testing is important to determine the ways to address, manage, and stop the spread of the virus and to obtain the most appropriate care for those infected. Across the world, the non-medical interventions adopted for COVID-19 are the imposition of movement restrictions, community quarantine, social distancing, contact tracing, suspension of activities, and social gathering prohibition. Though these interventions are effective in reducing the spread of virus infection, delivery of the most appropriate health care is still a priority.
MJH in appreciation of the donations received on its fight against the virus is also offering COVID-19 test services discounts to its donors. MJH continuous to receive donations from the following:
Feed the Frontliners
Justin Uy& Marie Lim and Aubrey Guinto
Joint Donation of CDO and De Jesus Family
